Hotel Rezoning Tabled

Loganville Planning Commission, at their meeting Thursday night, tabled the request to annex and rezone the property at Brand and Oak Roads.

A developer, Diversified Development Co., had petitioned the commission to annex the 3+ acre track into the city limits of Loganville and rezone the property from residential to CH for a hotel.

At the meeting, attended by a number of Bay Creek homeowners, the developer asked the planning commission to table his rezoning request for 30 days. He gave no explanation for his reason to table his request.

The planning commission will meet at at 7:30 p.m., October 23, to listen to Diversified's petition.

Bay Creek HOA to engage in NIMBYism again?

The Bay Creek HOA has posted a blog entry alerting their members of a possible upcoming rezoning battle. The interesting thing here is that the proposed hotel is over a mile from the entrance of their neighborhood and on the opposite side of GA Highway 20. This is hardly a development that is in their backyard and would have any material impact on the use of their homes and property. I can only see this as another likely case of NIMBYism. While I cannot say until I further investigate this sitaution whether their opposition has any merit, as someone who lives close to the Bay Creek development, this is a zoning case on which I can offer my two cents as more than just a blogger. I would remind readers that the Bay Creek HOA has a history of NIMBY activism. The HOA was actively involved in an effort to oppose the Strawberry Field zoning case last year, a case that reared its head in the District 3 Commission race this summer.

To the homeowner who said, he/she could not say whether the opposition to the hotel has merit until he/she further investigated the situation regarding the hotel, perhaps you SHOULD do some investigation.

Loganville's two hotels - Bright Inn and Whitt's Inn - both opened as nice hotels to serve our community. Bright's was once a Ramada...but now both hotels aren't exactly nice places to stay. Police make repeated calls to Whitt's Inn.

Maybe NIMBYism is what we need to keep this out of our neighborhood.

NIMBY is an acronym for Not In My Back Yard. The term is used to describe opposition to a new project by residents, even if they themselves and those around will benefit from the construction. Often, the new project being opposed is generally considered a benefit for many, but residents nearby the immediate location consider it undesirable and would generally prefer the building to be "elsewhere".

It is possible that maybe, just maybe some nice amenities in this area would bring more business people. No Loganville is not huge for tourists but we do have more and more businesses in the area i.e. Lowes, petsmart, office Depot, etc and presumably VP's, Managers, Inspectors, etc need to make site visits as I do in my business as a Regional manager for a large company. I know that I like to stay near the facilities I am visiting but if there are no amenities and nice facilities then i can not and will not do so. So it seems this is a bit of a catch 22 of sorts and we may be damned if we do and damned if we don't. I do know for sure that if we don't allow and even encourage growth and new and improved amenities brought into the area a lot more than Hotels are going to suffer. And just a little FYI.. it's not as thought the Police don't get called into our own neighborhood quite often so should we oppose new people moving in if they too don't meet our standards? We need to try to look at all aspects with open minds and not be so quick to judge and execute those who are trying to do something.

FYI...the reason that Plantation at Bay Creek is the only neighborhood mentioned in the covenants is that when the covenants were written by the developer, there was only one neighborhood....the Plantation at Bay Creek.

The developer, Roddy Sturdivant, never had the covenants rewritten to reflect the new neighborhoods that he added to the subdivision.

Well FYI.. maybe the convenants need to be changed! They are clearly biased and unfair to the other neighborhoods within the HOA.
